Every story has a beginning.

I'm TJ Nilsdatter. A writer, and a lifelong student of the question that drives everything I do: who were the people who made me?

​

It started with my own story. Written across decades in my own voice, the way you'd tell it around a campfire. Somewhere in the writing I began to see my grandparents in myself. Their struggles. Their resilience. The ways they held on when everything was pulling them under.

And then I found something deeper. Struggles that came before me. Lives that shaped the people who shaped me. People who deserved to be recognized. People whose stories deserved to be told.

So I started digging. And what I found changed everything.

Four family lines. Two continents. A century of survival I am still writing my way through.

I am a wife, a mother of three grown sons, and a proud Blue Star Mom. I know the particular silence of a submarine deployment. I know what it means to wait. I know what it means to hold on.

I write to make sure their stories survive. For my sons. And for anyone who has ever looked at an old photograph and wondered who that person really was.
